🛡️ Is My Condition Covered? (PMB Check)
Show ▼
Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMBs) are conditions every registered medical aid must cover by law — on every option, regardless of how basic the plan is. Check a condition below.
What the colours mean Green — On the Chronic Disease List. Your scheme must cover this on any option. Yellow — May be covered as a PMB in certain cases. Confirm with your scheme. Red — Not a guaranteed PMB. Cover depends on your specific option's benefits.
PMB rules apply to South African schemes (Medical Schemes Act). General guide — always confirm with your scheme. Council for Medical Schemes: 0861 123 267.

Going to hospital for a planned operation or procedure? Your medical aid must authorise it BEFORE you go in — usually at least 48 hours before admission. For emergencies, phone within 24 hours or on the first working day after. Choose your scheme below to see exactly what to do (South African & Namibian schemes).
📋 Have this ready before you phone:
• Your membership number — and who the patient is (dependant code if not the main member)
• Date of admission or appointment — and the time if you have it
• Practice number of the hospital — phone the hospital's reception for it
• Practice number of the specialist / treating doctor — phone their rooms for it
• Your referring doctor's practice number also helps
• The ICD-10 diagnosis code — ask your doctor, it's on your referral letter
• The procedure / tariff code — your doctor or the hospital provides this
You will receive an authorisation number — write it down and take it with you to the hospital.
Numbers verified July 2026 but can change — the pre-authorisation number is also printed on the back of your membership card. No authorisation may mean the scheme pays less or nothing, so always phone first.
🛡️ What is Gap Cover?
Show ▼
Gap cover is extra insurance that pays the difference when a specialist, surgeon, or anaesthetist charges more than your medical aid pays. Example: your medical aid pays 100% of the scheme rate, but the surgeon charges 300% — gap cover pays the missing 200%.
⚠️ Most useful if: you have a hospital plan or are planning surgery. Specialist bills of 2–5× the scheme rate are common in private hospitals.
Good to know:
• It is separate from your medical aid — you must already belong to a medical aid scheme. • Typically costs around R200–R500 per family per month. • Waiting periods may apply (often 3–12 months for existing conditions). • It does NOT cover day-to-day costs like GP visits or medicine.
Always compare quotes and read the policy wording before signing. Medical aid payment disputes: Council for Medical Schemes 0861 123 267.
✈️ Travel & Medical Insurance Abroad
Show ▼
If you get ill or injured outside South Africa, your medical aid's normal benefits do NOT apply overseas — you need travel cover. A hospital stay abroad can cost millions of rand.
💡 First check what you already have: • Many SA schemes (Discovery, Bonitas, Momentum etc.) include emergency international travel cover for trips up to ±90 days — but you must often register/activate it BEFORE you leave. Phone your scheme. • If you paid for your ticket with a credit card, the card often includes basic travel insurance automatically — check with your bank.
When to buy extra travel insurance:
• Trips longer than your scheme's cover period • Adventure activities (diving, skiing, hiking) • Travel to countries with expensive healthcare (USA!) • Schengen-visa countries require proof of medical travel cover (min €30,000) • If you have chronic conditions — declare them, otherwise claims may be rejected
• Carry your chronic medication in original packaging + a copy of the script • Ask your GP for a short letter listing conditions & medication (customs + foreign doctors) • Save your insurer's 24-hr emergency number in your phone before you fly • Load your allergies, conditions and emergency contact in this app — the My Card QR code works anywhere in the world
General guide. Compare policy wording — especially chronic condition exclusions and evacuation/repatriation cover.

🎗️ Organ Donation — Give the Gift of Life
One organ donor can save up to 7 lives, and tissue donation can help up to 50 more. Registration is completely free, takes 2 minutes, and costs your family nothing.
⚠️ The most important step: tell your family. In practice your family's consent decides at the time — registering AND telling them your wishes is what truly makes you a donor.
💡 Once registered, set "Registered organ donor" under Profile → Medical Information — it will show on your health card and emergency screen where paramedics look.
Almost anyone can register regardless of age or health — doctors assess suitability at the time. Your medical care always comes first; donation is only ever considered after death has been declared.

Mediclinic▼

Details at lifehealthcare.co.za.
State / Government hospital (no medical aid)▼
Public hospitals treat everyone — fees are on a sliding scale based on income (UPFS). Take: your ID, your clinic card / referral letter from the clinic or GP, proof of address, and proof of income (payslip, or SASSA card if you receive a grant) so they can classify your fee correctly. Children under 6 and pregnant women are treated free; without proof of income you may be charged the highest rate.
